Tagging

Catalogablog is pointing to a new paper about "tagging," an issue which I have discussed previously in this blog.

I really enjoyed this literature review. The authors provide a neutral overview to the pros and cons inherent in both systems of controlled vocabulary and tagging. Perhaps their most important points to me were in the conclusion: that "the literature to date has focused on the ideological merits... of social tagging, with little attempt being made to understand the theoretical practicalities" and there there is "a lack of testable conceptual models and empirical studies." Thus, the article ends with the authors charging librarians and information science researchers to study tagging.
